Mud Room: Before and Inspiration

literally...

closet across from the window
ps.  that's not trash below the coats, it's recycling

other side of closet

To Do:
touch up paint walls, ceiling and trim
fill nail holes in quarter round trim
paint the (yes, already installed) quarter round
painstakingly remove trim paint from tile (see above)
mop (preferably before company comes on Friday eve)
And MOST IMPORTANTLY- figure out exactly what items belong in this closet.

Plan, plan, plan.  There is no doubt in my mind that this is the most important step to organizing any closet, drawer, shelf, etc.  If you think about it, a disorganized space is mostly due to items being there that don't belong and a lack of space or storage for the items that do actually belong there.  So if we can clear out the stuff that doesn't make sense, we'll have room for the stuff that does.  And then it will become clear what types of storage items we need to purchase (boxes, bins, shelves, etc).  Seriously, physically force yourself to wait until the last possible moment to buy pretty storage boxes.

Anyway...here's some inspiration from Martha Stewart.  I love the two rows of shaker pegs, but David thinks we don't have enough wall space.  I agree with him until I look at these pics again and then I think we should try it anyway.
